We are thrilled to announce that this fall ReTreeUS, will be partnering with our school to plant an educational orchard on our grounds. ReTreeUS has been planting orchards in schools and with community partners for 13 years, and they will be planting their 109th orchard this September 25th at our school! Here at WHS they will be planting 6 apple, 3 asian pear, and 3 peach trees… but they won’t be doing it alone. Students will be involved in every step of the planting process. From digging proper planting holes to mixing in compost, applying mulch and planting the trees! All students will gain hands-on experience in the basics of agriculture. These activities will teach them about the environment, sustainable agriculture, and the many benefits fruit trees bring, including nutritious food, improved air quality, and support for pollinators. However, the learning opportunities won’t end when the planting is done, as teachers will be able to utilize the school orchard as an outdoor classroom, allowing students to experience hands-on lessons while adhering to curriculum guidelines. The legacy of this orchard will extend far beyond the harvests of the coming years. Students who participate in planting and caring for these trees will gain valuable skills and knowledge while leaving a lasting impact on our school and community. Their efforts will bear fruit—literally and figuratively—for generations to come. If you would like to learn more about the orchard or how to support the project, please contact Brian Davis (davisb@westbrookschools.org) and Stephanie Macdonald (macdonalds@westbrookschools.org).
Together we can continue planting trees of fruit and seeds of thought.
