SMAA Citizenship Award

Each year the Southwestern Maine Activities Association recognizes two seniors from each school for their outstanding contributions to their respective schools. The recipients are typically honored in April at a banquet held by the league. We are thrilled to congratulate Mackinna Campbell and Jason Shackley, recipients of the 2023 SMAA Citizenship Award! WHS Athletics & Activities Director Beth Murphy joined these stellar student-athletes on Monday evening at the SMAA Awards Banquet.

Mackinna is a three sport varsity athlete, who has excelled in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track & Field. When she is not setting PRs and racing to finish lines all over Southern Maine, Mackinna is passionate about giving back to the community. Over the past year, she developed and led an initiative in coordination with Westbrook City Hall to engage young people in the local election process as poll workers. For those efforts, she received recognition at the Maine State House. Mackinna is a star, and WHS is incredibly proud of this well deserved honor. Congratulations to Mackinna and the Campbell family!

Jason, the latest in a long line of Shackley standouts, is a three sport varsity athlete, who has donned the Blue and White on the soccer field, basketball court, and lacrosse field. Most recently Jason was a senior leader and integral member of the Blue Blazes Boys Soccer and Basketball teams, both of which made exciting playoff runs after posting outstanding regular seasons. Hopefully Boys Lacrosse follows suit. Additionally, Jason is an active contributor in the community and an elite student, taking multiple AP classes and achieving at the highest levels. The Citizenship Award is a fitting accolade for all of his hard work and dedication. Congratulations to Jason and all of the Shackleys!
