Education Pathways

Many of our Education Pathways graduates pursue the diverse opportunities available in this field. Some go on to teach at the preschool, elementary, or middle school levels, while others find roles in daycare centers as assistant teachers, lead teachers, or directors—or even establish their own daycare facilities. Additionally, graduates have built careers as social workers, physical therapists, and occupational therapists, highlighting the wide range of possibilities this field offers.

Education Pathways I: Early Childhood Careers is the first of two classes required to earn the Certified Early Childhood Assistant credential, endorsed by Maine Roads to Quality. In this first year of the program, students explore various career opportunities while gaining hands-on experience by operating a lab nursery school. As student teachers, they work with children aged 3 to 5, planning and implementing diverse learning activities that allow them to develop and practice teaching skills.

Year Two: Specialization and Career Exploration
A continuation of Education Pathways I, also open to incoming 12th graders with instructor permission

In the second year of the program, students dive deeper into their chosen career pathways within the field of early childhood education. Part of the year is dedicated to hands-on teaching experience with four- and five-year-olds in our on-site lab nursery school. The remainder of the year focuses on individualized exploration based on each student’s interests and career goals.

Whether you're considering a future as an elementary school teacher, a speech-language pathologist, or an occupational therapist, this program offers tailored opportunities to gain experience in your chosen field. For example, aspiring teachers may assist in local elementary classrooms at the grade level of their choice, while students interested in therapy careers may be paired with professionals in those fields for job shadowing or mentorship. We encourage you to explore all the exciting possibilities that align with your passions.

Professional Certification and College Credit Opportunities
Throughout the second year, students will continue to build a professional portfolio and have the opportunity to earn the Certified Early Childhood Assistant (CECA) credential through Maine Roads to Quality. Achieving this certification grants a Level 3 status, which enhances employability and may offer wage advantages due to state recognition.

Additionally, we partner with local community colleges and the University of Maine at Farmington, allowing students to earn up to 16 transferable college credits during the two-year program. With the instructor's recommendation, eligible students may also earn an additional 6 college credits through participation in UMF’s pathway program.

Please note that our textbooks are written at a college level.
