           WINTERKIDS at Canal School


Canal School won the Bronze Medal in the 2019 Winter Kids Games! The school was honoredat a surprise assembly on February 15. Attending were members of the Winter Kids Team along with WMTW Meteorologist Sarah Long, Mayor Mike Sanphy, Superintendent Peter Lancia, Assistant Superintendent Jodi Mezzanotte, and city councilors Mike Foley and Victor Chau. Principal Vickie Hebert was presented with a $1,500 check. Canal also received a special award in recognition - the Winter Kids Literacy Award - in recognition of their many activities promoting literacy. A HUGE thank you to the Canal Planning team - Ann Brown, Susie Brown, Jami Murphy, and Vickie Hebert.

WinterKids Closing Ceremonies

WinterKids is underway at Canal School! The opening ceremony was held on January 7. Mayor Mike Sanphy presented a proclamation to Canal School and Rep. Drew Gattine read a letter from Gov. Janet Mills. Also, there were video messages from Westbrook alum and NFL player Trevor Bates and Sen. Susan Collins. Representatives from the WInter Kids program, several businesses who support the program, City Councilors Mike Foley and Victor Chau, the WHS band, WRVC public safety students, Superintendent Dr. Peter Lancia, Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte, and Police Chief Janine Roberts also attended. Even the L.L. Bean Boot-mobile and our very own Blue Blaze mascot were present! Principal Vickie Hebert and her team of teachers have organized an exciting month. 


Over the next four weeks, students at Canal School will participate in different activities that promote health, physical activity, nutrition, literacy, and family engagement. Activities earn points as Canal “goes for the Gold” and competes with 32 other schools in the state. The school with the most points receives the Gold Medal and $5000! In addition,  the silver medal with $2500 and a Bronze Medal with $1500 is awarded. The focus is on building healthy habits and keeping kids active and healthy all winter long. 


WinterKids is a non-profit organization with offices in Westbrook that helps children develop healthy, lifelong habits through education and fun, outdoor winter activity. The organization delivers innovative outdoor programs for families, schools, and communities. WinterKids' major community sponsor is Hannaford.
