Great Things are Happening in Westbrook
and in our Music Department
The WHS Jazz Ensemble received Honorable Mention (4th place) at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival in Boston on January 26. Senior tenor sax player Nate J. received the Judges Award for both the Ensemble and the Combo competition. The groups played their pieces and the judges, who are all Berklee faculty, gave them constructive and critical feedback. We are all very proud of our musicians! On February 7, the WHS bands presented a special concert entitled "A Night at the Movies" at WPAC. The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble provided live music to 5 films that were student edited as a soundtrack. This was a new, and amazing, venture for Westbrook Bands. The concert also included traditional concert selections by Bartok and Boysen, as well as the World Premiere of John O’Hara’s (WHS class of 2013) “Sitting Here” for Wind Band. The concert also featured the Westbrook High School Jazz Band performing New Orleans Jazz music and music by Duke Ellington and Nat Adderley, and the Award-Winning Westbrook High School Jazz Ensemble performing music by Duke Ellington and Michael Flatley’s “Riverdance.”
And finally, the Westbrook Music Department hosted the Maine Band Directors' Association Jazz Festival on February 9 at WPAC. Four Westbrook jazz groups (including our Jazz Choir) performed along with 9 other schools. Thank you to the Music Boosters, Kyle Smith, Suzanne Proulx, Krystle Smith, and the whole Westbrook Music Department for making this festival possible!
